My 2011 Birthday Wish

Yesterday was January 21st marking the completion of 59 years of living…and today I begin my sixth decade of being on this wonderful earth.

Last year, a friend, Steve Chase, and I started an educational non-profit intending to partner with other non-profits to help overlooked young people and communities around the world.  We started close to home.  In August, 2010, we went to Ensenada, Mexico to visit Greg Amstutz at his terrific ministry to many Baja orphanages.  You can find out more about it here:  http://www.genesisdiez.org/home.html

As I reflect upon my birthday and the things that make this day special I realize more than ever that it is my desire to give more than receive.  So many wonderful friends have given to my family and various needs we have had.  I could not have made it without their help.  Maybe that is why I feel so passionate about helping others now.

Once a year in February, Genesis Diez has a gala in San Diego.  Della and I along with Steve and Mary will be attending this to stand in solidarity with the mission and the people of Genesis Diez.

But I have a desire.  I need your help to make it happen.  We want to send a large gift to Genesis Diez to help them reach their 2011 goals.  Would you prayerfully consider sending a monetary gift to:

Bearing Their Burdens

1700 Airline Hwy

PMB 415

Hollister, CA 95023

We will take every contribution to this event next month.  It will help orphan children and a relocated native Indian community in the Ensenada area that you do not know and very likely will never meet…until Heaven.  Thank you for reading this request and letting God direct you.  We so appreciate every friend we have!

Your friend celebrating his birthday,

Emery Smith

Three Roads

I am a Westerner. No, I am a Californian. Something about the road and the wide open spaces seem to be in my blood. I love to drive. That is a good thing because my jobs for the past fifteen years have taken me on many highways and byways usually 150 to 300 miles per day.
All this time on the road has lead me to consider a few things.

Most Californians living in the North are so happy to live here. But there are numerous reasons to travel South. In many ways, California is two States in one.

For some the need to ‘get there’ is so powerful that the Fast Route, I-5, is the only intelligent option. There is almost nothing, including the stark scenery, to slow you down as the road is filled with motivated high-speed travelers all agreeing to the same goal, even the truckers.

Highway 101 represents a slower transition from the green and simpler life of Northern California to the denser people-centered South. But it is still a highly traveled route through beautiful communities.

When the destination is not the priority of the trip but the process itself is the emphasis, there can be no other choice than Highway 1. One forgets every other thing than the unchanged views of nature. Time is also forgotten. The joy of seeing the interaction of ocean and mountains delights with almost every turn. Getting there just doesn’t matter.

Our spiritual life can parallel these three journeys.

At times in our lives, we care about nothing than to get to the next place on our list.

As we grow a family, the journey takes on more of a priority and the process and people and those interactions are valuable as we learn our purpose here on Earth.

In our maturity, the details are all about enjoying the day-to-day encounters trusting God for His direction and blessing in every turn. Here we are never disappointed.

a 59th birthday song

I will praise GOD with my whole heart for He has given me ABUNDANT life!

My wife Della and I were reminded the other night of several life-threatening times we know could have been so much worse.

If not for GOD, I could not be here…simple, immature and such ignorant choices were made by me. Along with several events beyond my control, reaching 59 next Friday would have been impossible. BUT for GOD alone. Thank you Father for the gift of life!

I think the birthday gift I want more than anything else is to give You the rest of my life. What can you do with a man like me?

Would you take my life as gratitude from a son who is glad to be alive?

I am excited what is yet to be…You have always told me ‘The Best Is Yet To Come!’

Thanks Abba Father.

Then GOD said…

Have you ever wondered why the Bible begins with “In the beginning, GOD…?
It seems as though we are being invited to see the Authority of all Creation. It takes our focus right to the Author and His ability to be above every circumstance and before anything else.
Think about this:
GOD was first. GOD just spoke what He wanted and nothing held His plan back from becoming the new ‘normal’. What He wanted He got.
So 6000 years later, He wants you. I think you would be wise to give Him what He wants. If you notice, every time He made something He called it good until GOD made us…then He called it Very Good. His plans are so very good for each of us…as Jeremiah 29:11 promises.
Have a BLESSED Day as you give yourself away to the King of Everything Good!

Prayer Is Invading The Impossible

Jack Hayford’s great book from 1977 reminds us of the significance of prayer as well as the power source.
“If believers will come in prayer to Jesus – who alone is accredited as the official baptizer-with-the-Holy-Spirit – they will receive the timeless promise of divine enablement (Acts 2:39). They will not earn this experience with prayer, but they will receive it through prayer. And while faith is the instrument by which all God’s provision is reached for, experience is the criterion for judging whether faith has been effective.” (Pg 35)

It seems to me that:
We must DECLARE what we have received and then function with this awesome weapon in our lives. If we handle a weapon correctly, learning its power and care, it will be useful against all enemies. Prayer is designed to restore a Kingdom of love, grace, mercy and intimacy to all – not to allow the enemy to restrict us from our rightful relationship with the King.

Then GOD said – Day 2

When GOD speaks, there is something to listen to of extreme value.  I am going through the Bible this year showing all the words GOD said and let them speak for themselves.  His Word is light.  His Word produces results.  His Word is always good and for our benefit.  His Word is love.

The NLT uses the phrase “then God said”.  It is as if He allows circumstance or even our opinion to be spoken first, then He has the lasting Word.  I like this.  He gives us a chance to see the real picture and then only guides and corrects as needed.  Of course, since we were born in sin, much guiding and correction is required.  But a Father loves in His correction and He is the chief example of this in His unfailing love relationship with us throughout time.

Genesis 3

9 Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 11 “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?” 13 Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” 14 Then the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live. 15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will striket your head, and you will strike his heel.” 16 Then he said to the woman, “I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.t17 And to the man he said, “Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you.  All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it. 18 It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains. 19 By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.” 22 Then the Lord God said, “Look, the human beingst have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!”

Genesis 4

6 “Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? 7 You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” 9 Afterward the Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?” 10 But the Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground! 11 Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother’s blood. 12 No longer will the ground yield good crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.” 15 The Lord replied, “No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him.

Then GOD said – Day 1

January 1, 2011                 Genesis

Gen 1:  3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 6 Then God said, “Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.” 9 Then God said, “Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear.”  11 Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” 14 Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. 15 Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.” 20 Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.” 22 Then God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” 24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals. 26 Then God said, “Let us make human beingst in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” 28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” 29 Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food.30 And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—everything that has life.”

Genesis 2

16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”
