Chimamanda Adichie: The danger of a single story

19 minutes of revealing one story cannot by definition be an adequate portrayal of a culture and thus any one person before we hear their many unique stories.

It is amazing how we all can fall prey to this perspective that ‘flattens our experience’ overlooking the many other stories that form us. The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story. It robs people of dignity. It also focuses on our differences rather than our similarities.
